Phantom inventory: why it costs you sales on MercadoLibre Full

June 6, 2026

“Phantom inventory” is the gap between what you think you have and what you can actually sell. It’s not a minor accounting glitch: it causes invisible stockouts, oversells and paused listings right when they sell the most.

Where the phantom comes from

  • The same product across multiple listings. On MercadoLibre, one physical product can live in several listings (catalog + your own) that share stock. Summing each one fools you.
  • Stock split across channels. What you sent to MELI Full is no longer available for Amazon FBA or your 3PL, but your reports count it twice.
  • Reserved and in-transit units. Reserved, inbound or under-review units aren’t sellable today, even if the total says otherwise.
  • Unmatched SKUs. If the same product has different keys per channel, no system knows it’s the same.

The real cost

A stockout on MELI Full isn’t just a lost sale: it hurts your reputation and the listing’s ranking. Recovering rank takes weeks. And overselling — promising what you don’t have — triggers cancellations that hit the same metric.

How to eliminate it

  1. Unify by EAN/GTIN. One physical product = one stock truth, no matter how many listings.
  2. Compute real available, not the total: total − reserved − in-transit − non-sellable.
  3. Consolidate channels into one view (Amazon, MELI, 3PL) so you don’t double-count.
  4. Early alerts: warn when real available drops below threshold, not when it already hit zero.

The golden rule

The number that matters isn’t “how much total stock do I have,” but how many units can I promise today, per channel, without overselling. That’s the data that kills the phantom.

In short

Phantom inventory comes from unmatched SKUs, split stock and undeducted reserves. You kill it with an EAN/GTIN catalog and a real cross-channel available view — exactly what iqseller does.
